More than 10 people, including business owners and citizens, spoke out against the proposed license requirements for tattoo and piercing parlors at the regular city council meeting Tuesday. The council took no action on the issue at the meeting and sent it back to committees for review.
The proposed requirements include requiring business insurance, limiting piercing to ear lobes only, requiring that artists be certified and keeping customer records. Councilman David Horton said the city shouldn’t pass anything that would put tattoo businesses out of business. “Everybody seems to have a tattoo these days,” he said. Ernie Hussey of Morehead City said he read the proposed requirements and they reminded him of a dictatorship. “I recognize the right to free enterprise,” he said.
Connie Asero, executive director of the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association, was the only person who spoke in favor of the requirements. She said the association wrote the letter that prompted the city staff to create the proposed requirements. It is seeking to protect the area’s businesses in an attempt to draw more customers.
